When going on a sailing holiday one can charter a sailing boat. For people with limited experience or people that do not feel comfortable sailing in a new area, there is the possiblity to join a flotilla. A flotilla is an organised sailing holiday where you sail your own (rented) boat. The organisation provides a flotilla leader who plannes every leg and briefs all participants with information about the different possible routes, distances, the things to watch out for like tides, currents, undepths,... , weather forecast, etc...
All boats sail individually to the next destination or team up with other participants. During the trip boats can keep in touch with each other or the flotilla leader over the radio (VHF). At the destination boats group back together where people socialize amongst other participants. Some flotilla's cater specially for families with kids.
